im not sure...but i grew up on a small island in the atlantic ocean and trust me island people can be SOOOOOOO superstitious....eg...if you see a white cat cross the road its bad luck and youve got to spin around twice to get rid of it..
or if youll see spirits if you were born with a cord around your neck....or if you eat fruit off a tree that has a bottle of dirt hanging in it..your stomach will swell up like the tide...
trust me ive heard so many heehe...but i dont beleive in any of it...

my exhusband refused to buy me shoes for the 3 years of our marriage becuase he said id walk out on him..
it took 2 years to persuade him otherwise..and when he did...i walked out on him 2 months later ( for different reasons of course) but he doesnt see it that way! he wants my shoes back.
lets just say i got rid of them.

I don't know the specific answers, but more interesting (I think) is the reason why people are superstitious in the first place. Most scientists who have studied the question believe that it's because we automatically assume there must be a specific cause for any effect we see. If we don't know the actual cause, we assume that something unrelated must have caused it. For example, if there's been an extended drought and a shaman or priest does a rain dance, the rain dance will be thought of as successful as soon as the rain appears. Most superstitions probably arise out of coincidences.

It's also interesting to read how superstitions vary among cultures, and some are actually contradictory. For example, in North America black cats are considered bad luck, but in Britain they're considered good luck.

The origin is the same in all cases: it's the result of erroneous reasoning.

Humans are special in part because we can understand the relationships between different things. We can tell that sunlight makes plants grow, that trees come from seeds, etc.
But the ability to draw connections between different things isn't perfect. A lot of the time, it's wrong.

Some people (those who are naturally inclined to it, or those who lack education) don't easily differentiate between good ideas and bad ones. They'll draw connections between things that aren't actually related at all, even though they might *seem* related in certain instances.

Those people tell their friends and family, some of whom believe them, because they possess the same faculty for erroneous reasoning. And so the myth perpetuates.

Superstition is an attempt to control things we do not understand. They were ways to please and find favour with God, the elements as a sentient force or others things such as animal spirits, etc. and many other issues that were not within control..
