Hey susie101lc,

I recommend you learn the arm motion in the shallow end first. Safer. When you master the arms, it will be enough to save your life.

Wave your arms back and forth, front to back at same time. With fingers held together, cup your hands and point the cup downward. Then slightly bend your wrist so you cup points behind you (when you wave your arms just below the surface of the water), and wave your arms back. From behind you, wave your arms foreward, cup pointing forward, that pushes water. You pushing the water forward/down, then backward/down makes forces against your body in the upward direction. This gives you lift, or treding water with your arms.

Now add your feet by dangeling them below you, you will aim your feet/toes at the bottom of the pool. Your legs will make your feet go back and forth (still aiming at the bottom of the pool). The Left and Right are opposite each other - When R goes forward, L goes backward.

Put the arms and legs in motion together and you are treading water. To get better at this practice only legs for some time. This will give you confidence that the legs are doing the job of giving you upward lift.

You should get comfortable with this in on or two days. BE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEONE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES WHEN YOU ARE IN THE POOL.

do you no how to tread water just do breath stroke with your body pointing down to the swimming pool floor and keep your head up and just slowly go forward

Synchronized swimmers and water polo players use a techinique called egg beatering. To do it you bend your knees slightly and rotate your legs from the knees down. One leg goes clockwise and the other leg goes counter clockwise. Once you master this you can even raise both of your hands above water and just use your legs to keep you up.

basically just kick you feet downwards, as if you are riding a bike and wave your arms at your side on the top of the water, not fast just do is slow so you wont tire out. if you really want to stay afloat just lay on your back, legs and arms stretched like a star and you will not sink.

i would recommend egg beater. It is a fairly simple and becomes effortless after a while. what you need to do is rotate your legs either inwards or outwards. while you are learning dont forget to scull (move your hands back and forth near the surface) this will allow you to perfect the technique and timing that will reduce the amount of effort you need

Practise while holding on to the side until you get the confidence to let go.

Do a kick like you would swimming breast-stroke.

well first of all its a bit of practising to be done first, u jus move ur feet around. its pretty hard to explain really..

kick your feet back and forth and move your arms back and forth and slightly down with your hands slightly cupped.
