It's insulting, but I don't really think most people who use the expression thing about what they are saying to gay people. It is just one of those figures of speech that has fallen into our vocabulary.

I teach 6th graders and I hear it all day long. My students have to write a half-page about respect for others' lifestyles. In my conservative county that's about as far as I can go with it and keep my job. I also do the same about "You're so retarded" -they have to write a half-page about empathy and resistance to making ignorant statements.
What's horrifying is that when I was in the 6th grade my friends and I used to say, "That's so Jewish!" BTW- I did not meet a Jewish person until I went to college. YIKES! Wake-up call in so many respects. I graduated with a degree in sociology. I ate my education up and licked the plate! I loved the enlightenment of college! Can we all just go back?

Well, one might say that the gay community co-opted the word "gay" in the first place, because it used to mean just happy; carefree; joyous. So now the term has been co-opted back, and it no longer just means homo. It seems to have evolved into a generally derisive or critical term.
That usage does not bother me.

If it's my gay friend's I don't mind at all.
If it's straight people who are using as a term for something bad, then I don't like it. Same with the word f a g or other derisive terms.

It's nothing but hateful slang. Every time I hear it used the user DOES get quite an earful.

It's thoughtless, and we should think before opening our mouths. I try not to use words or phrases that are based on disparaging stereotypes--like "jew him down" or "welsh on a bet."

I think it's thoughtless and insensitive when straight people say that...especially when it's little kids at school. that "haters" train their kids young to be bigots...and that's really sad.
