Does anyone know for a fact that it does not do any degree of permanent damage? Loud and prolonged noise damages hearing. The intense light of the flash reaches the retina before the iris even has a chance to contract. To say it's harmless without certain knowledge is irresponsible.

Yes. The light from the flash will TEMPORALLY stun the eye. This could disable vision for a view minutes, but full vision will soon be restored.

yes, it does. so better not to over-do it...some eyes are extremely sensitive to light. better ask first before taking the photo with a flash.
