There is actually an urban legend about bible's in hotel rooms.
http://www.snopes.com/luck/gideon.asp
Basically someone leaves money in the bible as a reward for some one who is seeking guidance and turns to the bible for it. Sorry if this if off topic or offencive to anyone.

just an old tradition i guess, that nobody really wants to break. I'm a Christian but not a really *good* Christian I guess since I don't read the bible every night. And I feel like if someone did read the bible every night, they'd bring one with them on trips, right? So I don't think it's all that necessary. I also think it's highly offensive to athiests, and especially muslims and jews, since their book of worship isn't in the hotels. But I guess hotels just want to stick with the tradition so as not to upset any Christians. And I can't totally blame them for that.

It is there in case you are thinking of doing something wrong, an affair, suicide...etc., there are reasons why people stay in a hotel. It could be for vacation, business or out of necessity. But in some cases people stay in hotel rooms for other reasons not necessarily good ones. So that is what I think because the bible is symbolic of spirituality and guidance - just in case you were thinking of doing something that you might regret.

Free.

a good mayority of travelers are in hotel rooms because of job requirements or involuntary predicaments as i was for 2yrs. with no relatives, friends or aquaintancies in any given city. people in those situations tend get depressed and or suicidal. the Bible is a powerful positive force in the aforementioned enviroment. must there be another purpose when it helps one hold on to one's sanity?

Gideons is the organization responsible in providing bibles to hotels, colleges, and prisons. The purpose is multi-faceted. Whether you seek comfort in reading the bible in the comfort of your own room, or to repent, or to wipe your butt with it...
it's just there.

I don't know, but as an Atheist it is highly offensive to me. I always call the concierge and demand that someone come to my room and remove the piece of trash or I will be using it as toilet paper!

something to read in the bathroom? I think it's supposed to make all the secret meetings between men and women feel guilty.
