STRELITZIA REGINAE or Bird of Paradise plant...

Native to South Africa, it was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (wife of King George the lll of England). It is a plant known in Europe since 1773. And is called the bird of paradise because of the flowers similarity to the plumaged head of tropical birds.

It can grow to nearly 5 ft. tall

It's a plant that needs plenty of sun...good for FULL sunlight exposure...

It needs soil: rich loam, peat and sand and a little manure fertilizer if placed in planters.

If placed directly in the garden it just needs a good garden soil..
Water liberally in summer, much less in winter...

It should bloom generously in springtime

I live in Massachusetts, I have an Arboretum house for public viewing.
My soil is made up of sterilized local earth amended with old compost and perlite to loosen the earth.
I get on average in the darkest part of winter, 7 hours of good light. Because I have a greenhouse the heat is consistent.
What does seem to help with the blooms is root pruning.
Once a year I take a flat shovel and cut a ring around the plant in the ground, out about 2 feet, I cut just as if I was going to transplant it ...BUT...I don't.
This root pruning seems to work for Birds, and for Clivea, to fool them into blooming for me. I hope I have been of some help?
