Is it the candidate for Prez, or is ti the Party? Because as far as I'm conserned that would be Georgie's mistake. The only time I've seen the Vice Prez is when his in the hospital, or when he shot that guy.

the candidate, though he couldn't just choose anyone. it becomes apparent during the primaries who he is likely to choose, and so there is some element of decision from the party as a whole.

and choosing dick cheney for vp might not have been the smartest move, but it's one of the less stupid things gwb has done. at least he didn't put rumsfeld there. :|

In practice, either the candidate's political party or the candidate.

However, under constitutional law (12th Amendment) there aren't any 'tickets'. President and Vice President are voted for separately, and electors are required to vote separately for President and Vice President.

What happens in practice, to get around this legal requirement, is that individual electors pledge only to vote for both slots together. So, when choosing electors, the population is in effect limited in their selection because of the way the electors are designated.

The pres. with help from party leaders. They usually choose someone who can bring in votes. For ex. if the Pres is from N. Eng. they might choose a southerner to bring in those votes.
Don't kid yourself. Cheney is very powerful. He calls the shots in this administration. (No pun intended.)
