I knocked over a gal of latex paint. Can a carpet cleaner get it up or do I have to replace the whole carpet?

Oil based paint: replace the carpet.

Latex, get a steam cleaner and see what happens. I did this once and got every bit up...but I got to the paint before it dried.

Don't use paint thinner on latex paint! Only works for oil-based paint. You can most definietly try to get it out with a steam cleaner...it wouldn't hurt anything, even if it doesn't work.

I've had good luck in getting paint out of my carpet (I have a 2-year old nephew who wanted to "help" me paint a couple of months ago, and he knocked over the bucket). We diluted some dishwashing liquid, and got it all up. But as mentioned before, it works best if it's not yet dried. Good luck!

i don't know about a steam cleaner but i was able to clean the paint out of brand new carpet with paint thinner, persistence and a mild detergent.

the first thing i did was dampen a rag with paint thinner and just meticulously started scrubbing. it took a very long time and about a can of paint thinner.

after cleaning as much of the paint out of the carpet with the thinner, i got a clean bucket of water and mild clothes detergent and began cleaning the paint thinner residue and the rest of the paint out of the carpet. you may have to do this several times with fresh water and detergent until the smell dissipates and the carpet is clean.

i will say it did not hurt the carpet i cleaned (it was more of a commercial grade) but that is not to say it will not harm your carpet. you might test a patch in an inconspicuous place to make sure it will not bleach or harm the carpet in anyway.

good luck.

All you can do is try! (Just be thankful it isn't white school glue! And yes, it did happen)
