Crewel is a type of embroidery which uses wool yarns rather than silk threads for the embroidery. Usually one removes one strand of the yarn from the packet of wool embroidery yarn after cutting the yarn into about 18 inch lengths. (about 1/2 meter).
It's rather an old embroidery style and often was used for designs of large flowers and tree of life style pictures. It can be used for any type designs, though.
I once did a Christmas wall hanging that was very Americana country and another time I did an embroidery of dandelions using crewel yarns.
You buy them in the same kind of packets as silk embroidery, only of course they are a bit bigger, like the kind used for needlepoint and bargello.

Hope this helps. :-)

It's kind of like needlepoint - or lace making. One of the two, anyway.
