im planning on getting a printer and the printer only comes with 1 ink cartridge which is color...will i need black to use the printer?..im thinking i would but i dont know if i have enough money to get both

You may only need one cartridge with that printer. I don't reccommend that, as such a setup uses more color ink. I'd reccommend something like an HP or a Brother, as both come with all the ink cartridges and, unlike a Lexmark printer, don't cost you an arm and a leg for ink later.

You need both cartridges. It is rare, by the way, that a printer comes equipped with only a color cartridge. Usually they come with both. I'd shop around a little more and buy one with cartridges included. Lexmark is a brand I have had good luck with and a black and a color cartridge were included.

If you only have a color cartridge, the printer will create black by combining all the colors. This can be a very expensive way to print, especially if you mainly print black text.

mostly ..yes you need both black and color cartridges. Depend by what model of printer is.

There are few Canon inkjet which can work with color only. Those are doing black from color (when you plug-in the color only) and you can use a super size black cartridge instead the color one for B&W prints only mode.

You will need both. Think about buying compatible inks or refills. They're cheaper.
