i want a tattoo but consider myself to have a low pain threshold, ive had piercings and they were all pretty painless, a friend said it hurts at first and then eases off, is this true? i want one at the bottom of my back or on my forearm/wrist, are these particularly painful areas?!

I've got four, including one on each foot - apparently one of the most painful body parts to get tattooed. To be honest they didn't bother me when I was getting them done, its like an irritating scratching that can grow into a sensation like getting a carpet burn. Black inking is supposed to be worse than colour and the bonier the part being tattooed the more likelihood for discomfort. This is basically because a tattoo is done by a needle jabbing very fast in a series of vibrations like a mini hammer action so if you think logically about it that's bound to be a bit more uncomfortable on an extremely bony part of you and you can feel a bit bruised afterwards. If you want one and have thought about it for a while just go for it, but make sure you go to a reputable place that's got all its certifications and is regularly inspected by the local authority. If you go to a decent place they'll talk to you before they do the tattoo anyway and they're great at alleviating any concerns you might have and putting you at ease. The last two I had were the ones on my feet (done on the same day) and I sat having a drink with the tattooist and chatting whilst he did the tattoos, we had a great laugh, and I've some great art work to show for it too!

Yes, getting a tattoo hurts. How sore it is depends entirely on where you get it. But it's rarely so sore you can't get it finished. I've got a band around my upper arm. The outer side of the arm is a bit sore but the inside, where there's less muscle and more soft flesh, the tattooist had to press harder so it hurt more. My exwife has a sun and moon design around her belly button. That, according to her, was the most painful thing she's had done. Soft part of the body, lot of pressure. Other places that hurt. Anywhere where skin covers close to bone. So anything on the shin is going to nip, for example. Feet are incredibly sensitive, especially on the sole, and while getting tats anywhere else will hurt, tattooing on the feet will hurt LOTS. If you want something done on your back, it's about the best place to do it if you aren't keen on pain. It will still hurt on the soft bits, but you have fewer nerve endings on your back than any other part of your body so it hurts a bit less. And if you do get a tattoo, don't do it with a hangover. My first one, I'd been drinking until three in the morning on the night before. Six hours sleep, probably still a bit drunk, sitting in the tattooists chair getting whiter and whiter until I had to bolt for the toilet and boak. (Boak, a Scots word for throwing up) A little pain feels worse when you've got a hangover.... And don't get them anywhere you can't cover them, unless you want to end up doing a manual job. If you want something proffesional in your life (accountant, lawyer, stockbroker, that sort of thing) a tattoo is not going to be the best thing you want to show at your interview. People make judgements on the type of person who gets tattoos. Nine times out of ten that judgement is wrong, but when you're trying to get a new job those are the kind of odds you don't need.

Like some touching a BAD sunburn. It's bearable in most places. The lower back will probably be the most tender. The wrist and forearm should be no problem.
Do a lot of thinking before you get a tattoo. You'll be wearing it for the rest of your life. Be sure it's something you won't be ashamed of later. Consider also your job or career. Will that tat' on your wrist or forearm be acceptable if it's going to show?

Depends on the individual. I have loads & they all hurt anyone that says different is a liar. It is true that it gets easier as it goes on. Quiet sharp on the underside of the wrist & also on the bottom of backs however the pain is far from unbearable & Proberly hurts a lot less than you think. I know my tattoo stuff as I do it myself. In my opinions piercings are worst but over a lot quicker but hey thats me & I hate the thought of a needle passing through me. I'd rather Have a tattoo anyday. If they were that painful I wouldn't have them on my head, neck including throat, Stomach, Back, Legs, Full sleeves on both arms & I even have one on my Private part. Can be described as an orgasm in reverse.

Apparenty it depends of certain factors, like you said you pain threshold, where the tattoo is ( ie on a boney area) and if you go to a tattooist that offer a slight numbing of the area to be tattooed, all it is, is a dab of numbing fluid rubbed on the area nothing too serious. and as i was tolded it does hurt to start of with but after a while you get use to it and it just becomes normal.. its when you get home and you friend slaps you on the tattoo, now that hurts..

Places with more bone are going to be more painful. The lower back is alright but still a little painful. The wrist or like the ankle are going to be pretty painful.

lower back will sting initally but taper off as that area becomes numb. your forearm/wrist will hurt like a motherfu*cker to be honest with you. your wrist will hurt more since the skin there is relatively thin and your bones are right there. your forearm will hurt as well but, again, the pain will taer off as the process goes on.

tattoos near bone or softer flesh (i.e. underarms) are especially painful

back tattoos along the spine are quite painful...but there are worse areas to get ink...the tattoos i have on my wrists and forearms did not hurt very much at all
