Before using chemicals, home remedies and snakes try the easy way first. Use a cup shaped plunger. It's a two person job. Remove the tub stopper, put the plunger over the drain, add some water to the tub to get good suction, have the other person hold a piece of plastic, saran wrap is good, under a wet wash cloth over the overflow drain to prevent air from getting in and then plunge the drain vigorously. Remove any hair and junk that come out. Repeat until drain is flowing again. This usually works as most tub stoppages is just hair. If you put a cup or two of household bleach in the drain once every week or two it will dissolve any hair buildups. I've been doing this for more years than I care to mention and always had good luck.

There's this spiffy long plastic stick with a saw blade edge on it that you can put in the drain and pull out..it snags all the hair.

I also use baking soda and pour in hot white vinegar. If you have a coffee maker, you can run the white vinegar through the coffee maker...cleans out the hardwater and lime deposits. Take the cover off the drain, add in 1/2 of baking soda...then pour the hot vinegar into the drain...fizzes nicely and cleans it out.

If those don't work, you may need to buy a "snake" (plumbing auger) and put some serious effort into it.

The drain should be mechanically cleaned. Drain cleaning chemicals should only be used as a last resort.

You should be able to unscrew the cap to the drain itself. Once you do that, you can use a coat hanger (put a small curve on the end) to clean out what is usually long strands of hair.

I don't know if this is advisable, but I just go ahead and pour drain-o down the bath tub when it clogs.
