Semen on the cervix is the best way to speed up dilation because the prostaglandins in the semen act to naturally "ripen" the cervix.
Hospitals often use a synthetic prostaglandin gel to induce labour, and it is physically smeared on by the doctor or midwife. Otherwise they give you a shot of syntocin (synthetic oxytocin hormones) which does the same thing. You can amp up your own oxytocin levels by doing things that give you that "warm fuzzy feeling". For some it is cuddling, some like to eat chocolate and others get that happy buzz through sexual intimacy (yet another reason sex is so often prescribed!).
Walking is a fantastic way to get your pelvis ready for the labour and also to thelp baby get into position. Gravity is one the best labour-aids in child birth, so stay upright for as long as you possibly can (even if it is sitting or kneeling). Lying down makes your body work against gravity and also makes it a lot harder on baby and mother.
Unfortunately sometimes our bodies just want to do their own things and all we can do is wait it out. If your waters have broken there is a risk of infection so your doctor will probably chemically induce (and then possibly augment) as well as give you antibiotics if it has been 24 hours since any rupture in your membranes.
I hope it all goes well for you!

ok this sounds VERY weird but i just had my son 5 months ago and i was having a lot of trouble, they were supposed to enduce me the day before i had my son .. okay here's some WEIRD advice but true, most ppl say that if you have sex .. eat pizza, walk, and when you go to the doctor and they do those exams it can help you get started, .. i heard that having them enduce you is more painful b/c its quicker, but GOOD LUCK

Nothing will work unless your body is ready anyway. I had my membranes stripped at 39 wks and it did bring on braxton hicks contractions, but also alot of pain and some bleeding and lots of cramping for days. Its hard to be patient , I cant wait for my baby to show up either.

Other than walking and sex nothing else is safe. Trying to break your own water can put your baby's life at risk.
