I was just curious as to what characteristics you look for in potential employees.

There are several characteristics one looks for in a programmer. While some programmers think it is how much code they can write in X number of minutes, that is only a very very small percentage. The types of programmers I look for are the problem solvers. Ones who may not always know the answer but can quickly and easily find it. In other words, resourcefulness.

I also look for those who know how to identify a problem (not just its symptoms) and break that problem down (aka decomposition) into something manageable and solvable.

Besides these two qualities, I look for someone who can work in a team and be a team player. Teams are so crucial to working as a programmer and every once in awhile a programmer (like myself) needs to bounce ideas off another programmer. Different points of view can solve a problem in minutes that would take one person days to do.

Lastly, efficiency. Do they use the tools to their full advantage? Do they know how to get around, how to write elegant code? DO THEY DOCUMENT?

Programmers who don't do any or some of these things are not as good as someone who does them all.

Hope that was a good enough answer for you. Good luck!
