A convicted child molester just moved in across the street from me. Thank god for megans law so that we know that he is there. The problem I am having is I don't understand how the law is really supposed to help. First the people a few houses from me are not informed because they live too far away from him(3 houses!). We live one block from my childs elementary school(litterally 7 houses away from entrance of school on same side of street) and the small public town library is next door to him. How are those people protected! Peoples thoughts comments?

To the person who says call the police the problem is they know he is there. He is a registered sex offender. And to the person who says relax most only abuse family members how about you live next to one when you have an 8 year old daughter and a 4 moth old son. I know I'll send them over with cokies and say that a shame you got in trouble for feeling u that kid wanna play!
Anyway does anyone know how far they are supposed to live from a school?

Sweetie,I am glad to say that I'm not in your shoes.Speaking as a adult that was molested as a child. There is no true way to totally protect anyone from them completely.Granted u have been inform that he is there and that is a plus for ya to talk more with all the children in the area.Make them more aware of what they need to do.U are never to young to learn to protect yourself. But i would also start like a community watch so they none of the kids in the area are left unsupervised at anytime.Come together and help each other to help your children and remember this u don't always know who is a child molester. Some haven't and never will be caught and they could be the last person u would ever think.I am not saying any of this to scare u more.I am saying it to help u know that even in the Brady bunch neighborhoods it happens.Take care and love your children and teach them NO MATTER WHAT NO NO NO ONE IS TO TOUCH THE SPECIAL PLACES!!!!! And always believe your child first and ask questions later.Good luck and GOD PROTECT ALL THE CHILDREN.

The law is there to put responsibility in the hands of the parents, I think it is a poor excuse of a law, I could come up with one much better. I would make it where they couldn't live within the same neighborhood as the shool was or playground. If they were repeat offenders then they certainly wouldn't be out in public to have a chance to do it again. The other people are protected by word of mouth. Once you found out I guess they thought people would tell it and it the gossip would spread to others. I would check the laws and make sure he was at the proper distance from the school and playgrounds and such.

pass out fliers to all the houses with the megan's law site address. legally, i don't think you can point him out to your neighbors, just inform them one moved into the neighborhood and they can locate him on the site. this keeps families informed so they can keep a closer eye on their kids. prevention. Someone did ask a question similar to this. Before blasting the guy all over the neighborhood, find out exactly what the charge is by looking up your local sherrif website. there should be a way to input his name, get a booking number, find out the exact charge. it is possible he may have just violated the sex with minor law if it was a girlfriend while he was 18 or 19. and i would find out how many feet he's actually supposed to be away from the school.

Keep a close eye on the preverp. IF you see him near the school yard, call the cops..back to jail he goes. It won't be long before he is up to his old tricks...these people never get cured...they repeat the same crimes over and over...I don't understand our system of letting them out. Very strange indeed...but put up posters in the neighborhood with the alert you were given. Tack them all over the place, especially where children are living. Good luck

Relax, Atleast he is obeying the law. He has registered and is following his guidlines. This could be a case of him pissing in public, this case could be from 10 years ago. Read that stats. 90% of child molesters are a family member or a close family friend. It is rare for a RSO to commite a crime of someone they do not know.
You need to worry about the RSO that do not register and hide where they are currently living.
If everytime a RSO moves in a neighborhood and get herassed by neighbors then more and more RSO will stop registering for fear for themselves and their family.
You need to teach your family how to be safe and make your children aware not to speak or go around him.

Is there some reason you cannot distribute literature about his location in your neighborhood to your neighbors? Print it up and go and knock on every door to inform them. If some child gets hurt, you're going to feel awfully bad if you don't do something proactive NOW ! And put one in his mailbox...just to let him know everyone knows who and where he is! You're neighbors will thank you. Godloveya!

Doesn't that just make you mad. I would be irate. I think child molesters should stay in jail- they should not be released, they don't get better.
