Apply... and ask him too. Just say, "Wow! I really love your place. I would love to work here. Are you hiring?"

Ask for an application. Make sure you are dressed decently, you don't have to dress up unless it's an interview, but you do want to make the impression that you'll be a good employee. After you return your application, call in about five days to check up on it if you haven't heard anything from them, and let them know you are looking forward to an interview with them.

You might want to explain why you want to work there, especially if you like animals.
It always pays to be polite. (being polite is not sucking up, it is being pleasant to those around you)
