If your students order from book orders like Scholastic, you earn points that can be redeemed for books/supplies. When you sign up as a first-year teacher, you get more points and more free stuff. If you decide to do something like this, be sure to send a letter home to your parents encouraging them to order books so that you can then order free books for the classroom. You might also want to suggest to the teacher rep. of your PTO that a "Wish List" be put up in a high-traffic area for your parents to purchase items for the classroom. Many parents WANT to help out but often don't know how. Buying something for the classroom is much easier for a parent with a hectic schedule who is unable to volunteer within the school.
If you want textbooks, request an examination copy from various publishers. My husband has a room full of English textbooks (and more) just by asking. He keeps telling me to do the same, but I think it might be harder to do as an elementary teacher. Good luck!

These aren't free, but you could check out flea markets, yard sales & consignment shops or goodwill stores. Also, the dollar store has inexpensive books. You could also talk to your co-workers to see if they know of any retired teachers - often times, they would be more than willing to unload some of their old stash, just for the sake of not having to worry about storing it themselves!
Finally, you could sign up to send home book orders through scholastic.com. Once you send the books home & accumulate student orders, you get bonus points, which you can use to buy free books and classroom materials!

i would really hope you wouldn't "steal them from your next door teammate".
if you use Scholatic and order books or your kids order books, you earn points that can be used to buy books with.
you could ask parents for donations of new or used books.
you could ask for gift cards for the classroom library to book stores.
you could buy them yourself.
you could ask teammates if they have books they'd be willing to donate to you to start up your library.
it took me a few years to get hte library i have now. my first year, i didn't have one.
don't steal them. you're supposed to be a role model for your kids.

Scour yard sales and junk stores. Although not free, usually they are priced pretty low. Ask your parents to donate books. Put an ad in the paper for books suitable for your grade level.
The biggest thing is just to ask.

I have been searching all over for that answer!! Hopefully, you will get some good answers. In the meantime, I think I'll try thrift shops, yard sales, and just start calling different places to beg and see what happens. Good Luck!!

well you can buy them. or many students will donate books if you ask you know ones that they have already read and have no interest in keeping. my om is a teacher and when kids donate books she writes who its from and the year. its cool to look back and see how many of your students you remember. you may also want to have them write their interpretation or opinion on the book in which they may choose to donate.
