I am trying to set up my wireless internet connection, and I have here a wireless router. Do I need a modem? What is the distinction?

A modem is a box that transfers your signals to the internet. Yes you need one. The router just sends signals to other computers

Well, some routers come with a built in modem. In most cases, you'll need to buy a modem in addition to the router.

router is a device that accepting the signal from ur modem n turn into wireless signal or split into ports that can b used to connect other pc or device to connect to net.
modem is a device which connect to the phone line directly to get internet access.
