Does anyone know of a book I could give my friend, a single divorced mother, that deals with the problem of using a child as an emotional crutch and throwing out relationships with guys at the first sign of trouble?

No book but give her some good advice. Tell her to stop running away because she has been hurt by some jerk. Also let her know that if she keeps pushing guys away she will end up old and alone. And tell her to stop running at the first sign of trouble and to hang in there and work it out.

I dont think anyone can use their child as an emotional crutch. And as a single mom, I have "thrown away" relationships that seem to be trouble, because at the end of the day the person I love more than anything in the world is my child. I have enough crap to deal with without dealing with crap from a guy. Most single moms ultimately care about nothing but that their child is happy, healty, and safe.
The woman in question might just be scared about relationships, with due cause (if you're a single mom, chances are you've been burned in a relationship before)...
A child is never an emotional crutch... but a single moms world SHOULD revolve around her child... a single mom can date, sure, but I know personally if I was dating a guy I thought might not be good to have around my child, OR dating a guy who I couldn't see being a "Dad" to my child, I'd end the relationship rather than having my kid get attached to a guy who might not be around in the future...

Reality check. Any good mother will put her child's best interest first, even if it means making petulant, self-involved "friends" cranky.
