There are many reasons to be thankful. The first and foremost being that we are alive, and assuming have our health. Another reason is that we are living (assumably) in a country that has free clean water, accessible education and health care. That we are among the riches people in the world, (if you can actually own a computer then you are richer than more than half the world), that no matter what the weather is, there is always a means to stay out of it. Men and women legally have equal rights, and saying whats on your mind aint a crime. The list goes on and on. Do you want to include family? Cause theres no end to the possible catergories and subcategories and networks of love and support that make up a true family.
If your a Christian there is the that, the fact that you have recieved the greatest gift that anyone can ever recieve the gift of life after mortal death. The fact that you are loved.

I am not sure about cultivating a positive attitude because I have always been an optimist. I generally wake up each morning feeling happy. I am excited to learn new things and like keeping my mind active. I do know that even when things get a little rough, I always tell myself that I am still more fortunate than a lot of people. I also immediately begin looking for the better side of what ever situation has arisen as well as possible solutions to my dilemma. To me, the reasons for a good attitude are so numerous. Waking up each day, having my family and friends, having things to do that I enjoy and keep me active, my health and the talents that I have been blessed with. I think that is part of it... feeling blessed. I feel blessed to be alive and that helps me be grateful for all I have and grateful to share it with others.

Funny you would use the word "reason" when attempting to describe a positive attitude towards life.
Let's move away from the rational justification and towards the "soulful" view of this question. It's actually more in-tuned to the "depths" of the meaning of life and has many more justifications (in my humble opinion). 1) Every day you're alive you're experiencing the amazing process of life around you (grass growing, sunshine, birds singing, rain showers, etc). 2) You're interacting with family, friends, animals, earth, etc.
Just take a walk with a three year old to the park and take along the dog. What fun the three of you will have. Wiggle your toes in the grass, teach the kid to throw a ball, and your spirit will soar.
And your soul (that mysterious connection to everything in the universe) sings with delight to have these experiences. That is the soulful "reason" to be thankful and positive (& happy).
Cheers

I am thankful EVERYDAY that me, my husband and children are healthy. That I have always, as an adult, been in a position to give rather than receive. I am blessed in more ways then I can list. I choose to be positive because being negative makes a person unappreciative of the good things in life. I know, I've seen it with my own eyes. Good Luck, really. Don't be a pessimist, you will just end up a very lonely, very sad person and will have wasted your life on it.

A reason to be happy, other than the obvious: to be alive, to be able to see, smell, hear, and walk. But most of all is have my family and friends around me for support on those days that I’m not feeling so happy.

Because being positive or being negative is a choice, and given a choice, I'd rather think in a way that gets me what I want, and just generally makes life EASIER to deal with.

We have a choice. Choose to be thankful. Choose to be positive. Choose to be happy. Look for the good in everything and the good in every person.

despite losing my job two weeks ago after 20+ years, I am thankful that I still wake up every day and have a chance to make a fresh start. It makes me think of others who do not have that opportunity and I am so thankful for those I love and who love me in return.
