Not sure what the situation is but "I don't know" is an answer that usually comes as a result of being caught doing something they shouldn't. It's difficult enough for an adult to admit when they are wrong and even more so for a child so rather than admit it they feel compelled to say something - especially if they are being bombarded with "Answer me!" from an angry adult. But it's even deeper than that - sometimes we all do something and then step back and realize "I don't know why I just did that!". Children act without really considering why they do what they do. They are just trying to have fun in their own little world. It's up to us to let them know "Why" what they do is either right or wrong.

Beyond that, "I don't know!"
