I have a very active 4mo boy. He is from one end of the crib to the other, on his tummy, on his back, constantly moving. Twice in the last few days I have found him with his whole leg through the bars of his crib. All the way as far as it would go through. This terrifies me because I'm afraid he's going to break his leg, or foot. He uses his foot to push the bumper pad down. Anything I can do to stop him from doing this???
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem, you can go to a craft store and pick up some inexpensive foam padding and if your craftsy sew some fabric around it almost like a pillow then sew some ties on it and tie it to the crib and then he won't be able to get his foot stuck. My now 9 month old did this constantly. You need not to have anything really thick though because he could chew on it and suffocate! This really helps me alot. Good Luck!

My children did this too while asleep -- and no, the leg did not get broken. But if you are really worried -- go to the Baby Store near you and purchase the mesh that you can attach to the crib railings and run under the mattress pad. That will keep the child's legs inside the crib when sleeping.

By the way -- this is normal for that age. My two liked to do this -- put hands out, put arms out, put legs out, kick around, wrap their little fingers around the posts, etc etc etc. They are just exploring the fascinating world of their crib and getting the exercise they need to be able to make their little bodies strong enough to crawl and then walk.

How about getting some plexiglass to attach to the outside of the crib (not on the inside) so he cannot do it? Bumper guards are not really safe as they can become a suffication hazard. at www.onestepahead.com they sell banister guards that could possibly be cut down to fit the outside of the crib.

I had the same problem with one of my girls. THe thing that worked for us was to weave the bumper pad through the bars. That way she couldn't push it down as easily & she couldn't untie it.(which she did often.) Good luck.

Ignore the idiot who said you were stupid & that it coudln't cause a child to break their leg. It can & has.

Not really, he's learning how his limbs work and shortly will figure out how to climb out of the crib.

You can put a solid something behind the bumper pad, something he can't step on or squish down.

hi- i have a 2 year old son and was having the same problem you are. one time he stuck his leg so far between the bars i couldent get it out and had to break one of the bars on his crib to free him. what i discovered is that when they put their leg in there- you come running to get them out... this works very well to their advantage if they are in time out... my son also discovered that if he turns his leg sideways he can slide it out. he grew out of this and i hope your child does too. good luck.

go to onestepahead.com
They have mesh bumper pads that cover the crib rails top to bottom.

Your son is acting completely normal. My daughter did this also until she finally learned that when an arm or a leg gets stuck, it hurts...and keeps on hurting until mommy or daddy comes in. She doesnt do it anymore. Your son will eventually learn his lesson and stop.
Just be patient!

It sounds like you need better bumper pads. They should be tight fighting to where your baby can't move them much.

my daughter did this for a month or so until she learnt to get herself back out of the hole! i tucked long towels from one side of the bars to the other so she could not get her feet through, another idea is to get a baby sleeping bag,
