An excellent question. I've heard of a number of methods, but one that made it very clear for me was this:
Imagine yourself at your own funeral. You can see your body lying in the coffin, but no one can see you. You can see the funeral processions, all the family and friends that you cared for are there, very grieved over your passing. The better the mental image you can make, the more effective this will be.
Now, imagine FOUR PEOPLE are going to make speeches commemorating your life and what you meant to them. One of them is a family member. One is a friend. One is a girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband. The other is someone else, anyone else (a co-worker, a boss, a mentor, a teacher of yours, etc). What would you WANT them to say about you and your life?
If you do this faithfully, you'll realize you've just uncovered some of your core values. You've uncovered what you think YOUR life should be about.
After that, take some time, a few hours if you need, and sit down with yourself and compare and contrast. Which of those values am I currently living? Which of them could I improve on? Take the ones you could improve on and think of micro-steps you could take towards becoming more that person.
For example, say you have a short-temper, but one of your goals is to be more patient. You could make a habit of taking a deep breath next time you feel yourself getting impatient. Reward yourself every time you manage to achieve a goal that gets you closer to being the person you want.
