Are you in need of a grab bar to help walk past the furnace, or a type of cage to prevent contact on the furnace surface grate? Maybe here http://www.favoritehardware.com/plumbing/heating/safety-rail/
If you don't find one, you might consider using an infants playpen with the bottom removed. Or have one custom made from rod iron welder.

I am not sure what you really need but I do have a suggestion.
The business of making the living spaces of the elderly safe is very important and I know that there are Federal and State agencies with web-sites and booklets that you can get great information from. All sorts of safety issues and help are addressed.
I live in NYC and a few years ago, because I was a healthcare advocate for 2 elderly persons, I obtained a booklet on Aging from the city Health Department. It was very helpful not only in their recommendations but they also provided a list of resources. In some cases, if the person is receiving home care and is under the constant supervision of a healthcare professional, certain equipment will be provided free or for a nominal fee.
Check the phone book for the number for your Department of Health in your city or county and you should be able to get some advise. It is a good starting point.
