True story- I was dancing at my school's winter ball and the principal came up to me squeezed my neck and told me to "stop humping." It's funny because he never said anything to the girl I was dancing with not even a warning. I really want to know if he is legally allowed to stop me from dancing it kind of seems like a breech of my first amendment rights. Thanks

I don't know if it was legal or not, but if it looked like you were having sex on the dance floor, I think he should have said something to BOTH of you.
Too many teens today have no clue where the boundaries are between good sense and exhibitionism. You can't base your actions by what's on TV, because they'll show anything to keep you watching.
When it comes to the average people in the world, doing stuff that is shown on TV amounts to being grossly out of place.

In many school systems, principals have a right to enforce standards of conduct. This can include dancing that appears to be overtly sexual in nature.

It's a very subjective area -- in other words, the appropriateness is in the eye of the beholder -- but if the principal did it, he probably has the right to do it under the school system's rules.

Particularly in schools below the college level, expressing yourself through dancing is not considered a First Amendment right.

I guess it's up to you how distasteful, provoking, and promisquous you want to look while you are dancing... but you were at a school function, so yes the principal CAN tell you how to dance! If you want to hump something when you dance my suggestion would be to become a stripper! Stop acting skanky!

Yes it was legal since you are dancing at a school sponsored event. If you want to go somewhere else to dance then you can do that, but at school you have to listen to those in charge.

Well if you look in the school's code of conduct there is probally something about lude acts...if your dancing was perceived to be lewd and it was in the code of conduct then yeah he had every right.

He can kick you out of the ball. It's a SCHOOL FUNCTION.

Learn to dance properly, monkeyboy.

If it was in a sexual manner, yes. But he should not have put his hands on you.
