YOU HAVE TO LIVE IN THE AREA A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD. BEFORE YOU CAN VOTE AND YES, YOU NEED TO BE REGISTERED. YOU DON'T HAVE TO VOTE AT ALL. IT'S JUST SOMETHING WE FEEL FREE TO DO IN OUR COUNTRY. IF YOU DON'T VOTE, YOU SHOULDN'T TALK ABOUT HOW THE GOVERNMENT IS RUN.

No it is not compulsory. Nor can it, under the Constitution.

And you said "either of the two parties". You realize that there are many different political parties in the country, even if it is the Democrats and Republicans who usually end up trying to run things.

No, it's not compulsory to vote here (& our lousy turnout rates reflect it.)

It's a good idea to register as early as possible if you do intend to vote. Many states have requirements that one be registered for a period of time before being allowed to vote. This being an election year, registering early will help you avoid any confusion with election officials when/if you go to the ballot box to vote. (Do remember to bring a photo ID with you as well.)

FYI: Registering for a given party does not make you a member of that party: it just makes you eligible to vote in that party's primary.

It should be. Belgians have compulsory voting, but many rather pay the fine for not voting in order to register their protest. I think thats better than not bothering your donkey first and moaning after.

No voting is not compulsory but it is one of the great freedoms we enjoy.I dont understand why so many people do not vote.

You are under no compulsion to vote or even register to vote. Nevertheless, I think you should at least register. You don't have to pick a party in order to register.

By the way, welcome to the USA!

What you did is okay. You won't have much of a say in what goes on in the politics of the country, but it's okay.
