I am in Florida and am bracing for Ernesto. We have had ample warning and if anyone is not ready for it, they it is their fault.

in reflecting on Katrina, I am not sure we gave the people of NO the same opportunities. I hate to pull out the race card, but it would seem that a hint of old school thinking was at hand, not so much in the terms of Black and Whites, as it is more of the rich and the poor. So my question is this, do you think that a year later, we have done all we could for the victims and also to prevent further incidents like this across America?

I am a Katrina survivor, and I think that the vast majority of the country gave all of the support one could ever dream of. We still have volunteers spending their vacations helping us to rebuild. I would like to thank everyone for their generosity, compassion, and support.
If you want to help more, You could visit our fair city as a tourist. We really need the tourists to return.

To begin with, you are "BRACING" for a thunder storm.
I do like what you said about ample warning and if anyone is not ready,it's their own fault.
I live here in Louisiana about 65 miles west southwest of New Orleans.CNN,Fox,The weather Channel, and every local net work from Texas to Florida was watching katrina.
People decided to stay and ride it out. Most all these people lived off our taxes. Our taxes put a roof over their head and food in their bellies.
These people decided to live in a flood zone.Nobody forced them to live on the gulf coast. The city of New Orleans does not deserve any federal money.
These people lived good before the storm, and they are going to live better after the storm.
It's time for these people to start doing for themselves. And quit looking for government handouts.
You stated "bracing for ernesto",all you are looking for is sympathy.

The government has done more than enough. It sent confusing messages to the people and then while the storm came in, the mayor was busy packing up his belongings to save his own stuff. In the future, people need to look out for number 1 and not wait for a suggestion from the government.

I live in Gulfport, MS. We were hit harder than New Orleans, it's just that we don't have any levees to break. I am sick to death of hearing poor pitiful me stories. We have managed to put our lives back together with minimal whining, just lots of hard work and, for the most part, outstanding people from all over the country who volunteer to help. People who refuse to help themselves and intend to live off of government money for as long as they can, all the while stating "You owe us more", deserve much less civil treatment. We persevere by the sweat of our brow, and with the help of kind hearted people...race and wealth be damned.

The government has given N.O. 200 billion (with a b) dollars, and how much did us average citizens give to them?

Then they also go international aid as well...I think they have gotten PLENTY.

However, I will concede the insurance companies didn't do enough.
