She wants more words. Each word costs 30 cents, so we will write this as .30x.
$4.50 + $.30x = $11.70
(subtract 4.50 from each side)
$.30x = $7.20
(divide by .30 to get the number of additional words)
x = 24
Don't forget, x is only the number of extra words! You need to still add the 12 she got for buying the ad.
12 + 24 = 36 words
