Most make you register (otherwise, how could they rate you?), so hopefully that's not the type of membership you mean. If you mean without having to pay for a membership, then there are plenty.

The most obvious is Yahoo! Games, but I don't consider that very good.

Someone else already mentioned itsyourturn.com, which is a pay site that lets you play a limited number of games at one time for free. The number of free games should be enough for most people. I don't recall them having ratings, though.

My favorite for "real time", instead of "correspondence" style is FICS (freechess.org). Unlimited free play, and they keep separate ratings for blitz, standard (slow), lightning, and other variants. Best free place on the internet for serious players. There are even tournaments and master lectures on strategy. Look for me there as Fromper, although I haven't played much lately.

I like http://www.freechess.org for free online play. You have to register but it is free and no membership dues are involved. Once you create your freechess.org account you can go to http://www.babaschess.net and download a free Windows interface. With an interface, play free online chess without using a web browser.
