well my degree course is a BA in Microbiology, something which I only found out a few months ago. I always thought it was a BSc.

Ok, I'm not making this up, This is what I study

and it's definitely a BA. I did 2 years of mainly biology and now 2 of microbiology

There is no difference actually. It depends on the universities and department. Some universities/departments award their graduates with BA.

At some universities BA degree is awarded if the department is associated with the School of Medicine and the BSc degree is awarded if the department is associated with the School of Art and Sciences.

But, in some universities the BA degree is more intended if you want to be a teacher and the BSc degree is more intended if you want to be a microbiologist.

You can get a BA in almost anything. Generally the BSc will be more respected though.

How could you not know what you were enrolling in! You need to take more care.

It may be possible to switch to the other degree with credit for the courses you have already done. This would be a good move if you're serious about your career.

BA -Bachelor of arts BSc -Bachelor of science. Not sure how you can get an arts degree in Microbiology though!!

I agree with how do you get a BA in a science field, but a BA means that you took more Liberal Arts classes than science classes. A BS degree means that you took more science than Liberal Arts classes.

The BS has more science courses attached.
The BA has more liberal arts courses attached.

I don't see how you can get a BA in science. BS is bacherlor of science and microbioloy is a science.
