I'm trying out for the dance team at my school and one of the requirements to get on the team is fouette turns. Of course those turns aren't easy and I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on how to perfect my fouette turn.

Begin in fourth position plie, body front, arms third. Pull up into releve as right foot beats passe behind then front and then extends croise devant (across the body). The beats are very quick you barely see them, but they are there. Open to second and pull back into beat back front passe and extent croise devant again. When you extend croise you should be in plie then releve as moving to second to help you get around. Arms open to second as you releve and close into first on the rotation. Using a pencil or a very light (one pound) weight you can switch hands as you open and close from second to first. This will help the strength and look of the arms.

First off, you need to make sure your using your plié and not just jolting back up and hopping around. That will help you get more control. You also should start by doing 16-32 pirouettes frOm 5th and at the bar, practice putting you leg in the right position and then move to doing a fouetté at bar ( only 1) and after going around once, grab hold of the bar and don't let you foot drop or over rotate. Balance. ( but you can still hold the bar). Also make sure your torso is not lagging. Make sure it is square with your hips and not all loose, make it so it rotates together, not separate. For the second question, try doing a turn ( start w/ balance, then single and continue on) and landing by stoping out on releve. And don't increase the number of turns until you get it down. For turns, it's all about upperbody, shoulders down, arms in correct position, hips down, shoulders above your hips... An excersice to imcrease the quantity of your turns is start by balancing in a turned in posse, hold, then try to turn it out( work on staying on balance), hold, then turn back in, then bring your right arm down by your side( still turned in and on releve), then do the left, hold. It's hard but you'll get it after practicing. Another one is you put you feet shoulder width apart and do releves( turned in), do 16 then plie for 4 counts, then pop straight into a releve, hold... And repeat. Hope this helps. This is how my teacher got me in to 8 pirouettes.

Try doing them at the barre without turning. Just move your leg and free arm, and concentrate on keeping your body in control. Do the "fortes" one at a time. Don't swing your leg, be in control. When you get comfortable with this, try turning and spotting (you can still use the barre for this), stopping after each turn.

At tryouts, remember to smile (this is very important), and appear confident. You're probably being judged on your potential as well as your current ability. Also, when it comes to the fortes, only do as many as you can do cleanly. Three clean turns look a lot better than six sloppy ones.

Good luck at tryouts!

-make sure your leg is exactly @ 90 degrees
-don't ever hop (unless your doing a tuck fouette)
-remember to ALWAYS spot the front
-keep your arms rounded and turned in
-always connect your pose
-make sure you get into a deep plie when your facing the front but when you go back up into a releve make sure you lock your leg as soon as you can
-remember when your trying out to not look terrified(even if you are!) make them look like the easiest thing in the world
-just think of it as one turn at a time
-practice dose'nt make perfect, but it sure helpa a lot!

GOOD LUCK AND PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE :)

start without turning, and if you need it, holding on to something. in fourth position and plie with leg extended out in front of you, then releve and move to the side, then to passe, continue doing this till you are really good and feel ready to turn. when you turn, do the exact same thing, however spot and use your arms.
