Like it or not: Jesus was a pinko, Jewish peacenik.
If the the Religious Right doesn't like it -- too bad. Go find another religion.

Jesus addressed the individual level in a world controlled by and for the Romans. The church, people of the way (as they became known) were communal in nature as pooling of resources at the private level under the Roman government was the only real way to survive with any true dignity.

I believe you are referring to acts of helping others, which in its purest sense could be called socialism, however that is not at all what socialism is today.
If you, and I would, like to go back to that kind of social help it would mean removing government imposed socialism and relying on people to help other people.

He absolutely did teach a kind of populism that many would call socialism. "Give all you have to the poor and follow me" was his commandment. Now in the US if you say we should give anything to the poor you are called socialist.

coragryph:
I don't recall anything in the New Testament about cold, heartless market economies or how good it is to have ineffectual gov't in times of natural disaster.
I think what he did teach has had some influence on socialist ideas.

not direct socialism... but many of the tenants that Jesus taught are clearly inherent in socialism...
do unto others as you would have them do unto you... is a base philosophy in socialism...
