I have comcast and i cant surf with the ethernet cable, just with my usb connected to the laptop to the cable modem. I want to setup wireless in the house but i need to be connected with the ethernet cable to connect the router and stuff. I was hoping that someone knows here instead of waiting for the tech. to come by next week to fix it. Reseting the modem wont work either. Originally it was working with the ethernet cable before a storm hit the area and messed up the service.

If nothing has changed on your computer (i.e. Ethernet TCP/IP settings), then the ethernet port on the modem has probably been damaged.

You might try and renew your IP address by...

1) Opening a Command Prompt Window
1a. Start -> Run -> Type CMD -> Enter
2) In the Command Prompt Window type...
ipconfig /release
3) In the same window type....
ipconfig /renew

This will send a message to Comcast to give your computer a new IP address. If you get an address like 0.0.0.0 or 169.X.X.X back then you are not getting a connection. Hope this helps.

Sounds like it may have been damaged. I know the ethernet port won't work if you have the usb cable connected at the same time. Other than that , I'm not sure.
