It’s interesting how the Mayor of New Orleans and many natives of the city pride themselves on referring to it as a “chocolate” city in order underscore the predominate racial class that lives there; mainly black. Yet at the same time they decry this government and this nation’s slowness to respond to the Katrina disaster, attributing racism to it. The line of reasoning goes that if it were a predominately white, affluent metropolis that got hit with the hurricane the response would have been quick and abundant. At the root of all racist dialogue is verbiage intended to highlight distinctions between classes of people on the basis of color. By calling New Orleans a chocolate city the Mayor and people indigenous to New Orleans are committing the fallacy that is at the very heart of racism – drawing a line of demarcation between them and us.
As an aside, it is interesting that for all its “chocolateness” New Orleans had to implore people all over the United States, who comprise the full gamut of colors and flavors, for assistance to rebuild their city. A full cornucopia of colors and flavors came to their aid; from caramel (Mexican labors), lemon (Asian engineers), and vanilla (white business owners, politicians, and philanthropists). If I were chocolate I would be quite ashamed. Why doesn’t the good mayor decry his own chocolate counter parts for not being instrumental in the reconstruction efforts? Of course that would require that he insist that his brethren work for a change, and if he did that, he probably wouldn’t have gotten reelected.
Now do I sound racist? It may come across that way to the hypersensitive. Do I care? No. Is what I just stated the truth? Yes!

Many say that the flooding of New Orleans was God flushing the toilet. So if you want to call it 'chocolate', be my guest!

It may be one of those situation where if Mayor Nagin says it, it's not racist, but if you say it , it is racist.

yeah, that wasn't one of his brightest moments....
I think he kinda lost if after Katrina, but hey that was tragic.
And if I was you, I wouldn't call someone chocolate, just to be on the safe side.
Just like it would be helluva annoying to be called vanilla!
