Absolute value is the positive of any value.

So if x = -8, then
The absolute value of x, denoted by |x|, would be 8
That is |x|=8

And if x = 9, then
Then |x| = 9

Good luck!

=)

Absolute value, as other writers have stated, is the value's distance from zero on a number line. Hence |-2| is 2, and |+2| is also 2. Fairly useless, except when it comes to complex numbers, (numbers with both a real and an imaginary part) which are represented on a two-dimensional axis. Hence, | 3 + 4i | is 5, for instance.

Absolute value is the distance from zero. Since distance can never be negative, the answer to an absolute value problem is always positive.

absolute value is a measure of distance.
think of a number line:

-3 to -2 to -1 to 0 to 1 to 2 to 3

the absolute value of of -3 otherwise known as l-3l is 3
because it is 3 away from zero

Think of it in terms of distance, how far a number is away from 0. Since distance can not be negitive, neither can absolute value.

Absolute in science refers to a fixed value -- like the speed of light which never varies.

This is as opposed to relative value -- like the flow of time which is relative to motion.

i know how you do it, but not why it's called absolute value. when you see the pair of straight up and down lines with a number in it, that number will ALWAYS be positive.

ex. |-5| = 5
ex. |5| = 5

hope that helps! good luck!!

It is the value of the number....no negatives, no positives.

Example l-4l=4
