First off it's not the cable !!!! If it holds in park, goes into reverse and drive then it will not be a cable. The problem is with the intermediate clutch pack. They are notorious for burning up and that's whats happened to your car. The only way for this to be corrected is with an overhaul. Don't be fooled by suggestions of changing your fluid & filter because it's too late for that and you'll be throwing away your money. I've been working on transmissions for 21 years and I've done my share of the transmission type you have. I know you were hoping for something simple, but sugar coating this is pointless.

You need to check the cable. It sounds to me like it is in the cable, hopefully. If you want to jack it up and pull the pan watch to make sure it goes into the detents.

YOUR SECOND GEAR CLUTCHES ARE BURNT. MAKE SURE IT IS FULL OF FLUID, AND CLEAN FLUID. IF IT IS, GET ANOTHER TRANS.
