Mine is going home along Snake Pass in The Peak District (Derbyshire, England). It's a beautiful, often hair-raising drive through forests, moors, lakes, hills and finally a couple of miles down a snaky 'mountain' pass until I finally see the lights of the town where I live.

What journey have you loved?

I get all nostalgic when I think about the journey from London to Aberystwyth where I was at uni. You start in the big city, drive all the way along the M4 and then you hit South Wales. Wind your way along country roads and then you find yourself on the coast with Aberystwyth a speck in the distance. Whatever the weather, it's gorgeous.

Even though I was terrified I will always remember the first time I went to Afghanistan to live. I came from Toronto to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Dubai, Dubai to Kabul. It was dark when we got into Dubai and so I didn't really get an idea where I was until we took off and saw the deserts of Arabia beneath us. On the 2 1/2 hour flight we crossed the Persian Golf and flew over Iran. I remember the desert below turning into mountains and starting to realize where I was actually going. When we started to decend into Kabul and I could see all the mud dwellings I remember thinking, "Oh, no, what am I doing". Then we landed on a bumpy air strip and saw men along the tarmac demining the in the grass. When we got into the airport I had never seen anything quite so crazy. Everyone was staring and we had body guards next to us at all times. I went to the toilet and nearly died jsut walking in. Yuck. Then we had to go outside where beggers surrounder us while we were pushed towards an armored vehicle. I remember fainting in the airport for a second to because I was so hot, tired and freaked out but someone caught me. I was terrified then but now I laugh when I think about it. Now I have gone in and out of Kabul so many times I stoped thinking about it.

Mine was The Grand Canyon..I walked on top of mountains that were cut and chipped down to walk on. I could see as far as my eyes would let me . I saw rock formation in different colors.Different shaped mountains all around. the canyon it self was so beautiful it made me wonder how this could be formed into such a great site to see. ..It was all under water many years ago and dried up and all that is seen is from the water and the tides hitting against the rock that formed it into a huge beautiful canyon. Looking down everything looked like ants i was so high up. Flowers all around and some trees made it all an artists picture ..

The Alaska Ferry takes the "inside passage" along the British Columbia coast, and on up to southeast Alaska, passing by coastal forests, great snow covered mountains, and glaciers. The scenery is truly magnificent beyond compare. I had the profound privilege of taking this journey back in 1983, and hope to return one day.

I have checked each one of your answeres, & with the exception
of Afganistan, & west Wales, have experienced all of them, each
of which has its own special beauty.
But standing out from the whole list Grand Canyon ,it is
breathtakingly beautiful, BUT there is somewhere more lovely!!!
That is Highway (1) The Pacific route from Nth Oregon down to
Southern California, Good enough to die for, I will never be able
to go again, due to illness, but its alive in my mind the whole time
Happy travels

Take the train from Exeter St. Davids to Newton Abbot (both in Devon). The train takes you from the Exe estuary and along the coast to the Teign estuary. It's bloody gorgeous, especially early in the morning when the sun hits the sea. It runs right by thr water too, so it's really exciting on rough days (if they haven't closed the line).

Oh, and it was built by Brunel :-)

I once went on a spring hike in hills of Gstaad, Switzerland (in the Alps) that are normally ski slopes in the winter, (I was in boarding school near lake Geneva and a group of us were on a sort of field trip). Anyway, we hiked up the hill and it was like being in "The Sound of Music" movie. Of course then it poured rain and we basically slid back down the hill, getting totally covered in mud!
