I don't think you really need a cell phone. I got mine when I turned 16 and started driving. If I went somewhere or something and would have to get a hold of my parents I just took my dad's that he never uses. It might be more convinent to have one, but it's definately not necessary.

Not if you were my child.
While you want one, you don't really need one. And who do you think is going to pay that bill? Your parents. Wait until you can afford to pay the monthly bill yourself with a job or other income NOT from your parents. Expect a $50 a month bill, so make sure you can afford it. Babysitting may not be reliable enough to always cover it, so you should have some kind of a steady job. Ask again then. They are still your parents so you don't have much choice. If you got a prepaid on your own at a convience store or somewhere, they would find out eventually. Not only would you loose the phone, but I bet a grounding would go along with it.
For now, offer a compromise. Maybe suggest the walkie-talkie cell phones for the whole family. They could get used to you having a phone, but you would only be able to contact them. They would know where you are when you are late, you could call to let them know if you are going somewhere, and other family matters. Once they see that you can be responsible, they may be more willing to be open to the idea. They are also a lot cheaper to buy and the bill is lower too.
After they have had a chance to get used to the idea, approach the subject of the Direct Connect phones, like Nokia. Agree that you will only use the Direct Connect services, it's free. If you call or have an incomming call, then you would pay for it. The lowest plans don't have a lot of minutes for the phones, so they would know quickly if you used the phone for more than talking to them.
When you are 16 or so and have a job, then ask about getting a real cell with your own money. They would have to co-sign since you are underage, but maybe a pre-paid one would be less objectionable. Almost no chance of you running up an expensive bill from talking too much.

I honestly think that there's no use for a cell-phone until you can drive. I never use my cell-phone unless it's an emergency (car won't start; somebody just stole my purse; i think a guy is following me so i have to call the police,etc....) because extra calls just cost money and can even put you in debt. Plus they're a huge responibility. So i'd suggest waiting a little bit, maybe 14 or 15, because, and I'm being honest with you, I think that 12 years old is a little too young to have a cell-phone.

ya... i had the same problem when i was your age..
Tell these three things:
1. I NEED a cell phone for emergencies and to be informed about sudden changes that i wouldn't know if i didn't have a cell phone.
2. I won't take up all the time on the home phone, or I can just talk on the home phone when I am at home, so I won't take up all the minutes on my cell phone.
3. When you need to pick me up from my frined's house and other events, I can call you or you can call me and you can know where I am and not have to worry about me as much as you would if i don't get a cellphone...
hope that this helps!!

If you want one that bad to stay in touch with them and a few friends, maybe they might be able to compromize with the Migo from Verizon. http://search.vzw.com/?market=28605&q=migo It is a cool little phone specially designed for kids your age and under. It holds 4 phone numbers only though. If you are wanting a call phone to just have one, or to look cool, or to talk with all your friends and then some all the time...no you don't need one. Cell phones are a responsibility, and one that your parents have to pay for right now. The best thing is either suck it up and go without one until you are older and you can afford it on your own, or if you know you want it to just keep in touch with a few friends and family, then talk with them about the Migo phone.

You should definitely have a cell phone. I had a cell phone when I was ten. You're definitely old enough.

I don't think that at 12 you need a cell phone. I think it's normal to wait until the kid is older and/or until the child gets their license.

i would say it all depends on the life you lead. if youre out a lot donig stuff it probobly would be best for you to have one. hoever you have to be ready for such a respnsibility - not talk overtime, plan out your minutes so that you would have enough, not lose or break your phone...andoyu dont need one if you are mostly just at school/home and your parents generally hjave a good idea of knowing where you are.
