Maybe you're not very photogenic. I've seen pictures of people that made them look kinda ugly, but in real life they were good-looking. I've also seen people who looked better in pictures than in real life.

Mirrors can be less than perfectly flat, therefore having slight variations in concavity and convexity, they will reflect back to you an altered image. The lighting used during viewing can also relfect different color tones - sunlight vs. flourescent vs. incandescent.
Camera lenses are glass, and sometimes they have internal mirrors used to change the image size internally. How a photo is developed will effect color intensity, or digital images can be modified. The amount of light exposure can also have an impact on photo quality.
A photo is also a snapshot in time, in which you have no recourse. But standing in front of a mirror, you can instantly change your pose or facial expression to something more appealing to you. In a photo, you have no control over your pose the exact moment the shot is taken.

Cameras and mirrors distort the way we really look. The curves in the lenses and the mirrors do not give an accurate reflection of who we are. Plus, who we are on the inside...how we see ourselves, love ourselves...will resonate to your outer appearance. So the question is really, how do you really see yourself?

the problem with the cameras is that your picture is taken at a single point and if u don't have the skill to be photogenetic(using a term to define ppl who are superb in photos)u look odd.
also if u have ever experienced the voice on a recorder does't sound like yours at all. its so unbelievable that the voice could be yours . that's why ppl say machines are not foolproof....

because a camera captures only a millisecond in time,u can be caught in mid-blink,eyes half-closed,looking crazy.it can catch u just as u sneeze,or in the split second it took for that pizza crust to fall from ur lips as u laughed.fleeting micro-expressions can be captured and frozen, when in real time, they happened so fast,no one noticed how goofy u looked.and red eye makes everyone look like a monster.if anyone catches a photo of u yawning---well,thats just terrible !!! but u dont usually look all distorted like that !!!!!

They catch odd angels and unflattering faces.
