My first cat Nike was named so because when I brought him home, he immediately curled up into my tennis shoe and took a nap, obviously Nikes.
My dog Bruno was a Rottweiler and he was the runt, so I gave him a name that sounded big and German since he was so small compared to his brothers.
My cat Molly was adopted, she came with it.
My other cat Icarus was named so because he was a stray who fell from a tree and broke the femur in his back leg. We thought, he fell from the sky, Icarus, Greek lore, etc.
My other cat (lots of cats) Chiyo because I was reading Memoirs of a Geisha and Chiyo was the little girl, and she fell off the roof, as did this cat, and broke her leg. (they all now know, break your leg, you get adopted)
And my last cat is Master Chief, because when I play Halo 2, he lays on my lap every single time. He had another name, and he got renamed.

I choose my favorite names from movies, books, TV, etc. and create a whole list of them so I have a bunch to choose from. Then I play around with names for my pets for a few days before choosing one. One will stick after one or two weeks, usually because it is the one that seems to fit or it is one the pet seems to answer to. This is where I got names like Libby, Sherlock, Jamie, Pooh, TinkerBell, Willow, Hannah, Mulan, Kairi, and Tara for various dogs I've had, Talisman "Talli", Ravenne, Dorian, Trance, Shelley, Misty, Orion, and Sam for various cats I've had, Amber, Seth, Sparky, Stitch, Sean, Timmy, Einstein, and Nora for various hamsters I've had, and Tangy for my favorite of all the goldfish I've had. As you can see, the names range from cutesy to rather serious, from human to regular pet names or even cartoonish. Make your own list and see what you come up with.

When I got out of an abusive marriage, my daughter and I decided the next pet we had would be called FREEDOM. Strangely enough, a kitty showed up in our apartment not long after this. We have no idea how it got there, but after checking with all the neighbors, we kept her and she is FREEDOM.
Had a white llasa apso named Blizzard.

I do a combination of the above.
I have a cat named SOCKS because he is black with 4 white paws.
A dog named Moose, because he looked like a moose when he ran. His body seemed disproportionate to hei sbody when he was a pup.
We had a dog named BEAR . When he was a pup he looked like a little bear cub.

YES...me too. I have a George and a Nefarious. They suit their names very very well.
I was the same way with my daughter's name. I was waiting to name her to get to know her a bit......the nurses and my husband were less than impressed and kept pushing me for a name.

I name them by color, by characters in books I've read, or just plain random names. Like "Kitty" for a dog. =)
