Yes! And the best part is YOU GET TO PICK them! A good friend knows you really well and loves you anyway.

I have only one nephew remaining so for all practical purposes I do not have a blood family. I do have good friends and I am often told by them they are my family. I am invited to their family functions and I am grateful for their love and care. BUT, there is something that comes with blood that I cannot explain and I miss not having blood family regardless of how much I love and respect my friends. If I could I would make it a crusade to try and impress the importance of blood family upon young people.

It's true that friends can be like family...but that shouldn't be the case. They should not be guiding you in growing up, but rather influencing you positively in how to get along in the world. They shouldn't discipline you, but they should share their concerns if they see you are doing something harmful. A lot of people don't get that, and act as if they are family, or actually parental figures rather than friends -- steer away from people like that -- that type of enmeshment in someone's life is all wrong in a friendship situation.
