The methods are brutal, that's why. From what I've heard the horses are not properly cared for and they are zapped in the head with a cattle prod and slaughtered before they are truly dead. Sure some places may do it humanely, but mostly we hear how they do it cruely. They are also shipped terrible! They are shoved into cattle trailers and foals are stamped to death and many horses die before they get to the place. Some auctions don't help either, so the horses just keep getting treated worse and worse.

It's hard to know where to stand on the issue, what would happen if it was outlawed? It's like the overpopulation with dogs and cats. I don't like it at all and from what I heard those plants were closed down and they are now shipped to Canada. PMU foals are commonly slaughtered.

These are foals whose mothers are tied up all throughout their pregnancy hooked up to have their urine collected and are never let out during this time. The foals are discarded and mares are bred and hooked up again.

There are many things that are not pleasant about the slaughter houses and I am not fond of it myself. The horse meat isn't even really eaten here, it's always shipped overseas. I'm not okay to slaughter the US's horses who have been working all their lives (what a retirement by the way) and send them to another country to be served up. The horse to many people is a national symbol.

That's why many people are fed up with it and don't like the idea of it. I can see why.

There are two slaughtering facilities in the united states, one in Texas and one in Illinois. They slaughter any horse, any gender, age, breed, etc that are given to them. People sell them horses that are sick, and ones that are perfectly healthy. They sell the hide here in the USA, and the meat to other countries, where it's considered a delicacy. It's big business, lots of money generated. The slaughter isn't as bad as it may sound if it's through one of the 2 approved facilities. It's quite humane all things concerned. Outlawing horse slaughter in the USA will force these people to send their horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. Often times, the drivers of the transport trucks don't stop and exercise, feed, or water them. They also don't stop to let the horses out to rest or graze. The transportation is the cruel part of horse slaughter. So, outlawing it here in the states would make the transportation worse, therefore making the whole ordeal more cruel and inhumane.

There are 2 places that slaughter horses in the U.S.
but there are slaughter houses in every state that process beef or chicken,
My horses are pets and I would never consider selling them for slaughter but there are folks that see horses as just livestock like a cow or a chicken.
My point is I do not hear a lot about the killing of beef, but If you use horse for food or a dog folks here in the U.S. think its wrong. but there are country's that think killing a head of beef is wrong.
Think of that next time you eat a hamburger.

What do you do with dangerous, or incorrigible animals? Who is going to bear the financial burden for a horse who has become crippled ( horse hurt themselves without our help) ? Do you let an improperly trained horse go through the "trader" route, constantly being hauled from one sale barn to the other..? Who, if anyone, has the financial resources and willingness to provide for the proper vet, farrier, feeding ect,,ect.. for unusable horses?
The slaughter market is needed... If more people would stop breeding unwanted horses, If backyard horse owners would educate themselves to deal with properly with horses.
Than it would not be needed..... Instead of having such an emotional view on this, answer these very real questions,, then make a statement..

It's a big deal in America, because us American's don't eat horse. We see them as pets and so naturally this upsets quite a bit of people! But I guess other countries will pay a good price for horse meat (and it's in quite a bit of dog foods) and horses can be bought at a cheap price. I don't agree with it, but then I am coming from a very one sided view point.

Very sad!
During World War II, due to the low supply and high price of beef, the state of New Jersey legalised the sale of horse meat. At war's end, the state again prohibited such sale, possibly in response to pressure from the beef lobby.

Although people in the United States rarely eat horse meat, around 50,000 horses are slaughtered each year in two abattoirs in Texas for export to Europe, Mexico, or Japan. Horse meat produced in the U.S. is also sold to zoos for carnivore feeding, due to its high protein content.

The 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and 1987 U.S. Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year winner, Ferdinand, is believed to have been slaughtered in Japan, likely for pet food.

And who cares what people say the idiot at the top who mentions that u should grow up...he should wake up...its not either or...you should help animals because they cannot fend for themselves and likwise people who cant help themselves, I would like to know what he does to contribute to society!

properly the situations are no longer stable wherein the animals are stored and "jeff" in simple terms in view which you had a small journey out of each and every of the slaughter in usa doesnt propose you are the be all and end all of tips and all human beings else is incorrect. thats no longer the way it occurs everywhere. the transport methods are inhumane, and its no longer because of the fact the slaughterhouses have closed down. it grow to be like this earlier and for people who take the argument that the horses have an prolonged holiday now that the slaughter properties have close down, properly why the hell do u think of that pigs and livestock nevertheless holiday on a tractor-trailer double decker for as much as 5 days devoid of nutrition or water? the slaughter properties for pigs and livestock are no longer close down. its barbaric each and each of ways around and the better area is that its all human led to. we breed to lots and then are too low-value and lazy to shelter the horses. and then we attempt to repair the problem by utilising slaughtering...specific it is clever forget with regard to the inspiration of the problem, that usually works!! ive pronounced serveral methods that horse slaughter must be carried out a minimum of greater humanely and nevertheless get thumbs down for it, so i assume lots of the folk at right here delight in horses being dealt with in a disgusting way. they exceedingly lots in simple terms shrink their throats open and enable them to bleed to demise, which takes it sluggish or shoot them. devoid of enforcers of animal regulations on the theory supervising we are able to purely think of what else might circulate on. i quite doubt all the folk doing the taking pictures are quite experienced marksmen. oh god and for some human beings to declare that we led to the pony issues in terms of organic decision by utilising no longer allowing them to be "farm animals" anymore has no theory what they are speaking approximately. stay inventory breeding is one hundred% synthetic decision, in an attempt to narrate stay inventory to organic decision is senseless. no purely that what approximately animals who're nevertheless seen stay inventory, like chickens, they are bred to have their breasts so great that they topple over and have themes with bone and muscle progression, how is that advantageous to them?

Here's the deal theres millions of people in the world who are treated cruel and inhumanely. So instead of wasting your time on animals maybe you should try to help your own kind. I think its pretty ridiculous that an organization would spend so much money on animals when humans are being treated worse. GROW UP! Help humans then animals!

I thought they were closing the 2 plants in the US. Personally I think they should keep them open. Now they have to haul the horses outside the US and do you really think those horses are going to be well treated?
