My neighbors lawns both drain onto my lawn which they water every night plus we water ours every night too as it only drains to the left and the right and the middle is left dry. My husband thinks this may be a "grading" issue or that possibly if we punched little holes in the lawn that it would fix the problem. I'm not so sure though as our dog dug a hole about 6" deep and 3" wide and there is standing water in it. What can we do to fix this problem?? we have a veritable swamp and hornets are attracted to the standing water.

a tricky situation indeed...a solution to your problem would be to aerate the soil with holes can help a little..also introduce as many earthworms into your lawn and they will do the job for you ( you can buy them from any fishing tackle shop) if the problem is standing water you may need to install a land drain ( a 4" pipe with perforations in it to gradually release the water,) you will need to connect to a gulley or storm drain,, the fall ( grading) in your garden will always make water gather in one area....you should talk to any landscape gardener for some advice and they should be able to give you some more tips...and watch out for those hornets hahaha...good luck!!

this will take some work but it will work find the low part of the yard and stake it then find the place that you want the water to go. Buy some perforated field line pipe if there is not a place for the water to go if you have a ditch you can run it to just us some solid field line pipe. State digging the trench for the pipe and let it get deeper as you go from the low part to the predetermined place. lay the pipe in the trench and 90 the pipe up. Make a concrete box around the part sticking up and put concret about 4" from the top of the 90. This will let the water run but will keep the line from being stopped up with grass and dirt. You will have to keep it cleaned out but it should work.

Dig a small trench along the boundaries to get rid of the excess on the perimeter of the lawn and then use a soaker in the middle of the lawn rather than a sprinkler.

Call your city/county planning department and see if they have stormwater runoff regulations. Your neighbor is the problem. It is probably a grading issue and might require a ditch at the edge of your property.

You probably need to install a french drain to help carry the water away.

I think your husband is correct. Try aerating the lawn first to see if this solves the problem. If not, you may need to regrade the yard.
