Here is the text:
Events in the late 1960s and early 1970s, most obiviously the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal, jolted the country with doubts and insecurities and created fundamental divisions among Amricans about thier countrys goals. The mainstream Protestant values which had held society together seemed to be collapsing, and no coherent, unifying system of belief emerged as an alternative. The 1980s saw a return to conservative family value and morals, as well as a renewal of national pride. The ultimate significantce, however, of this conservative revival is uncertain. Some critics observe that with the breakdown of consensus on beliefs and valus which began around 1970, there has been increasing disparity of opinion about Americans values and national goals.

It means the 10 wasted years and 50,000 wasted lives in Vietnam coupled with the corruption rampant in government divided the country and caused the nation to not only question their government, but also other fundamental values they had been taught to be sacred. Societal change is hard to reverse.

in the 1950s, most people in America thought the same things, looked the same, acted the same, worshiped the same.

Americans were divided over the Vietnam War; many began to distrust the US government after learning about the Watergate scandal. this was in the 1960s and early 70s.

In the 1980s, conservative values and the dominance of Protestant religions appeared to return.

We do not know the ultimate significance of these changes.

if this is for a college or high school class, your teacher needs to give you some clarification, cause this seems poorly written to me-I think what the author may be trying to say is that
during World Wars 1 and 2,Americans saw ourselves as fighting for a common cause,to keep the invaders off our shores.Ever since the Korean war, however, there is one thing that has changed our perception of war,and that would be television.Americans had never had so much information made available to them about events in foreign countries, they had never seen war so close to "first-hand."
I am still not sure what they are talking about when they mention the return to conservative family values, unless they are talking about the Reagan years.
