Leak water, huh...
Sounds to me like it was frozen, thawed, and refrozen. The ice crystals will stretch the tissue and cause it to "leak" when it's thawed. I would for sure complain to the supermarket, and maybe even go all the way to their executive offices. You're talking about public health and safety. Oy, I hope you're feeling better!

The water shouldn't matter so much, most likely the chicken is not the freshest, however many people buy chicken that was frozen before and refreeze it, and they are okay. Really it would be the smell that matters, if it smells real funny it is probably bad. ALWAYS make sure you check the tempature of the chicken with a meat theometer before taking out of the oven. Also clean up areas the raw chicken or it's packaging touched. Washing the cooking utensils through the cooking stages is a good idea as well. Keep finished and raw food area separate. This will prevent you from getting sick

When you buy a fresh chicken always tip it sideways to see if pink water runs down. If it is truly fresh, there won't be any water accumulating but if it is not fresh there will be more or less water, depending on how long it has been there, whether or not it has been thawed and refrozen and then thawed again. I often leave chickens in the store if all the packages have water in them.

It WAS NOT fresh. It was frozen and thawed.
If you re-froze it, not good, after being thawed.
If you have any left, even the bones, wrap it up and carry it back to the store. In any event SCREAM AND HOLLER LIKE HELL. Tell them you are all going to a doctor, the dog will be taken to a vet, and ask where should the bills be sent. Hold your ground, and if necessary, do it in front of customers.
They don't much like that.

Chicken is often injected with a nitrate/saline solution to "plump it up".That is probably what was leaking. Even a farm fresh chicken will give you Salmonella if it is undercooked.

This is your new smaller government at work.
The FDA will be glad to inform you how you can be PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for inspecting the food processing chain - they can't be a nanny anymore - they have big terrorism things to do instead.
-Your friendly smaller Republican government doing less with less so our cronies can do more.
