In my college goverment class, the professor gave us an assignment. The assignment was to go out near a road and set a timer for an hour, and durring that hour we were to count all the blue cars and then go back the next day and tell the professor how many blue cars we saw in that hour. Everyone who did the assignment failed, becuse he said that we should not have done it so blindly. That we should have asked him what this had to do with our class. So I failed this assignment, even though I did what he asked! Is this fair?

That is the meanest, most ridiculous thing I've heard for a long time. If I were you, I'd drop the class, if you can find another one to take its place. Is he going to just play stupid tricks on you all semester? In fact I would report it to the college dean. Problem is, a lot of the teachers in higher education have never been taught how to teach... many are educated only in their chosen field. And some of them are not really suited to have that much power over other human beings.

I don't consider it very fair, unless the prof warned his students in some way that assignments in his class weren't always what they seemed. Since this was a government class, my guess would be that he was trying to make a point about not blindly following government leaders. However, I think he could have found a better way to do it. Obviously, the goal of this assignment is lost because your focus is on whether or not it was fair, which is understandable. I would probably feel the same way if I were in your shoes. The professor needs to realize that his students trust him (at least at some level), and that they wouldn't think to ask what this assignment had to do with the class because a lot of college homework seems pointless.

I could see how you would think this is unfair, but I honestly can't believe everyone did it without inquiring for further info from the professor. He was teaching you a lesson. Is this an intro class--a class mainly intended for freshman? In high school, we just do what the teacher says, and we as students don't really have much of a voice. I think this professor was trying to demonstrate that you should be assertive and ask questions.

Wierd, I had a professor do the exact same thing a couple years ago when I was a freshman in college. I too failed, and felt like an idiot, but my professor was a bear and passed me any ways because i kissed *** (I will do anything to save my grades)

Not to be rude, but why are you expecting college to be fair? Isn't it supposed to be teaching you about life beyond the campus?

You're certainly not going to find consistent fairness in the workplace, in politics, or anywhere outside of Utopia. If this experience teaches you that, then maybe you should celebrate the value of the lesson rather than griping.

You can't control your professor's behavior, but you can control your own response. Choose the positive or the negative. Which state of mind would you rather dwell in? It's up to you and nobody else.

Even though you are getting alot of answers saying that was FAIR, I don't think so.
You did what your professor asked you to do.
Sorry about the experience.

ADD THAT INFORMATION ON WWW.RATEMYPROFESSOR.COM
then any others taking the course will look up his name and see what happened.

that sounds really stupid. he shouldn't actually give u a failing grade for it...he can point out that it wasn't a "real" assignment and that the ones who did it could feel a little sheepish, but he shouldn't give u a failing grade OR make u feel "stupid" for doing it.

teachers shouldn't use their Power and Authority to put people down

sounds unfair, but I understand what he was trying to teach. Next time you will be more careful and ask. Think of it as a lesson learned and a mistake you wont make again! good luck in class

I don't think that it was fair. You would think that it could be extra credit for trying to follow instructions. I hope you got some reading done!

Who cares if it had anything to do with the class or not?!?! The teacher said do it, I would have done it. If you had been lazy and not done it you would have passed? I would have been ticked with that teacher.
