It seems more appropriate that Kurosawa be matched with Takashi Shimura, since he's been in more films and often has the lead over Mifune. His work in Ikiru was marvelous. Both have individual careers outside of AK films, but it seems wrong to put one over the other IMHO. Thoughts?

Mifune has a greater cachet, being known to even some casual film fans (unlike Shimura). Perhaps Kurosawa's most iconic film is Rashomon, which of course starred Mifune. I think it's more a result of Mifune's breadth of popularity than anything else.

The problem may be that Western film goers are much more familiar with Mifune. Besides Japanese films, he has appeared in many English speaking movies. His voice is very recognizable to Americans.

they will always be lumped together til they have americanized names. we americans say japanese names like 'hashio fzzzzzzzumi' or something, no matter what its spelled like. kinda like how white people can never identify a black guy inna lineup lol. all we know is its foreign
