it sounds like the dip stick might not have went all the way down in the tube,,either that or you drove it some,,and it burned it,,or leaked it,,and you said you didn't see any spots under it,,it may be possible it is pulling some of it through the valve stem seals and burning it,,you wont see much smoke from it,,but they will use oil like mad,,if the seals are bad,,especially if its a small v-8,,i have seen even the little 4 cylinders use it like this,,i own a repair and restoration shop, and i have seen a lot of cars use oil,,but not smoke very much,,you might try changing the oil,,and see if that help,s,,dirty oil will break down ,,and loose its viscosity,,and this causes it to become unstable,,i know id try changing it before i did anything else to it,,all its going to cost you is a oil change,,and this might help determine where it might be going,,i hope this help,s,,,good luck with it.

While this may be an issue of the difference between checking the oil hot and cold, on a $500 car, I'd expect there to be some problems somewhere. The catch is to figure out where it's going. Check the exhaust - is it sooty or oily? Any sign of oil in the air filter? Both of those can mean burning oil. Park it on a piece of cardboard and see if it leaks.
One particularly evil oil leak is the oil pressure sending unit. Seen this before on one of my cars. These can leak a lot - but they will only leak with the engine running.
