....and which like us the least? I have been to three other countries besides the USA, which was Italy, Switzerland, and France and I found Italy to be the most friendly and charming. I have the choice to live in a European country for a year and I would really like to live in Italy, but I would like to know your stories from other countries or even just what you think. Thanks for the answers!

Spain, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland.

The least? Maybe France, because our elected officials keep dumping on them, but they were awfully nice to me.

The people in Belgium didn't like me very much. Its on the coast between Germany and the English Channel. The Germans treated me great though. Those people are great. Of course, the Brits are nice. A friend of mine was an exchange student in Italy and loved every day of it. You wouldnt have any problems there. Stay away from France. They love pretending that they don't know english once they find out where youre from. That was annoying. Anyway, enjoy the year.

I have been to all three of those countries, as well. They're all great for different reasons, but before you make a decision, why not chart all the things you love about each--you know, make a list of the pros of each, and then make a list of cons. That'll help you clarify your decision-making. Personally, I'd probably go to Italy, if I was going to spend a whole year, because you can travel from there around the Mediteranean. But, I'd want to check the rat population in the particular area I was looking at first. In Naples, for example, the rats are bigger than the cats!

I had an excellent time in Sophia, Bulgaria a few years ago. I understand that crime has gotten worse here and there. It isn't exactly what I would call "warm" but I found that people were no stranger to smiles and laughter when you got to know them. They could be incredibly generous and hospitable. However, as with much of the world that was behind the "Iron Curtain" of communism, there are long habits of quietly viewing strangers suspiciously. Trains and crowds were quiet and conversation was usually in tight little circles of family or friends. Conversation with strangers is usually both courteous and abruptly brief. It comes honestly from a time when casual words could be recorded and used against you later.

I remember happily taking pictures on a train. Everyone stoicly in place and silent, extra silent. Several looked furtively at a certain woman standing near me and when I turned her way, she caught my eye. Then she mouthed the English "no" and shook her head no in our tradition. I looked thoughtful at this and put my camera away. She gave me a slight hint of a smile and turned. Moments later, local conversations began to quietly titter about as life returned to normal. The amazing thing about it was first, for a Bulgarian to gesture "no" with the head is a chopping downward motion, kind of like our starting to bob our heads in saying "yes", just an abrupt downward nod. When Bulgarians say "yes", they rock their heads from side to side, something we might commonly mistake for "no" but different--we swivel our heads from side to side, which is what this woman did. She knew how to communicate to me. With the camera away the discomfort disolved and normal returned. So don't be too gregarious in a crowd.

Still, I used to live near Mexico and found the standard of living somewhat similar, yet if I were offered a ticket to Mexico in one hand and a ticket to Bulgaria in the other hand, without a moment's hesitation I would take the Bulgarian ticket. The language is weird, writing is worse (essentially Greek script and since I had a course in Greek a while back it helped), and they live on the edge of poverty (as does Mexico) but they were strangely more comfortable to me than when I stopped in England on the way back. England is certainly cleaner and better maintained as well as clearly understandable in language, but they were also distant in a curious way.

You would be happier in Italy I'm sure. But I would be happier in Bulgaria. I've mused from time to time about that as a place to take my social security check when retirement rolls around, should I live so long.

The Algarve and Madeira island are full of English who came for holidays and stayed to live.
The weather is great and we are peaceful and charming as well.

The English like us best for helping them in WW II. The Iraq like us least for creating war in their living rooms.

Would have to say England and Australia although I don't understand the pre-occupation of with having every country like us. If they don't like what we are about or how we live, then that's on them, we shouldn't have to impose on our way of life to make other nations like us more.
