Just eating a piece of small piece of ginger (pickled or fresh) will do the trick (it's a bit pungent, but it works instantly).
I'm a chef, and my former sous chef gave me a piece to chew on one shift where I was feeling particularly ill (i felt fine immediatley and finished the dinner shift).
To make it more palatable, I usually make a ginger tea: Boil about 2 cups of water with a whole knob of ginger (corsely chopped). Add 2 tablespoons of honey, a cinnamon stick, and chopped up fruit (chopped up pears or crushed blueberries work very well).
Reduce liquid by half. Strain out fruit, and either drink the liquid straight, or steep a chamomile tea bag in it. You may add more honey to taste.

Ginger works very well for nausea. Ginger tea -- if it's made from real ginger and not just flavoring -- is also good. The best way to use it is to boil sliced ginger root (which is surprisingly inexpensive in a regular grocery store in the produce dept) but even powdered ginger works in a pinch. Mix a half-teaspoon of powdered ginger into a mug of water and boil it in the microwave if you have to. Sweeten it if necessary. Honey's preferable for a sweetener, if you have any.
Peppermint tea is also good for calming upset stomachs.
By the way, this boiled ginger will also give your voice back for awhile when you lose your voice with a cold or similar sickness.

Absolutely helps. And if you take it as candied ginger or ginger tea, the result is immediate. When you feel nauseous it is hard to make yourself eat or drink anything but once you try it you'll keep it on hand all the time. If the tea seems too spicy, add a spoon of honey.
If your nausea is because of pregnancy you may get better relief from Raspberry Leaf tea, which has other health benefits.
Other stomach helps are Chamomile tea for stress. Peppermint tea for acid stomach. Lemon Balm tea for cramps. Ginger is particularly helpful if there is gas.

Ginger root does help, depending on why you are having nausea. Peppermint is also good. (My husband eats peppermint candy all the time for his sensitive stomach, although I'm trying to get him to try peppermint tea sometimes instead.) Try it as a tea, or candied ginger root grated onto foods. There's a ginger hard candy that has LOTS of ginger in it -- that's what I used when I was having upset stomach problems a few years ago -- but I can't recall the name, just that I found it in a natural foods store.

It would be unsafe to try to mask your nausea unless you know exactly why you are having nausea? Do you have a diagnosis? There are TONS of reasons why people have nausea, both physiological and anatomical. Say for instance, you have an obstruction in your bowels and you get nauseaous. Yes ginger may relieve your symptoms but it will not make the obstruction go away. So if you don't know, play it safe and see your doctor.

Today, ginger root is widely used as a digestive aid for mild stomach upset and is commonly recommended by professional herbalists to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness, pregnancy, and, sometimes, chemotherapy for cancer (although the latter has not been studied).

I have had several friends that have tried this, all with positive responses. One of my co-workes is from India, and uses several herbs to treat symptoms, he highly recommends ginger root for nausea, and states that it works very well.
